Pillars of Eternity Wiki

In response to patch v1.3.7.0.1377 to Pillars of Eternity (June 6, 2024), the random loot tables shown on the wiki have been updated. These changes may take time to propegate.

As a result, random loot data is no longer accurate to old versions of the game, including all console ports. We'll be working to provide a mechanism to switch between pre-patch and post-patch loot for console players.

A Two Story Job is a side quest in Pillars of Eternity.

Synopsis[ | ]

Lord Reymont is the wealthiest man in Brackenbury, who recently procured an unique jewel the Heart of the White March. Abrecan Doemenel plans to acquire it, to ensure that neither the Crucible Knights nor the Dozens can buy it and return it to the original dwarven owners in the White March, gaining a powerful ally and thus upsetting the delicate balance of power in the Bay.

Walkthrough[ | ]

There are two ways to receive this quest. The first is by entering an unmarked house in the northeast of the Copperlane where thieves will attack you. One of them has a Thieves' Letter which allows you to start the quest. You can give it to either Lord Reymont or to Abrecan Doemenel to proceed.

Alternatively, you can receive the quest directly from Abrecan Doemenel himself. This requires you to have been referred to him by his sister Danna during At All Costs after helping her kill Verzano. If you received the quest this way, Abrecan sends you to get him the letter from the thieves, preferably without violence. Again you can decide whether to return it to your employer or to show it to Lord Reymont.

If you return the note to the Doemenels, you are then tasked with stealing the Heart of the White March from the Reymonts. The easiest way to do this is to enter Reymont Manor through a second floor window, left ajar by an insider contact. Use a Grappling Hook or climb up the wall (Athletics 3 for all party members required) to get inside. Move along carefully through the adjacent corridor in Scouting Mode, and you should discover a hidden switch opening a false wall. Inside the secret room, a trapped (level 8) chest has the gem. Be careful in the corridor, as guards patrol the area. Once you have the "Heart", exit through the window and report back to Abrecan Doemenel. You will get 3000 Copper pands (cp) along with a Major Positive reputation increase with the Doemenels.

If you deliver the letter to Lord Reymont he will give you 2000 Copper pands (cp) and a Ring of Unshackling. If you note that the ring costs more than 2000 Copper pands (cp), you will be given an additional 500 Copper pands (cp). You will also receive Moderate Negative reputation with the Doemenels.

Notes[ | ]

  • Killing the patrolling guard doesn't appear to alter the outcome of the quest. Even if the guard was killed, Abrecan will still compliment you on not alerting anyone. You will lose slight Defiance Bay reputation for each guard, though.
  • If you are having trouble with the patrol, use your highest stealth character to bait one of the moving guards but then move out of range or sight. This will cause the guard to stand still for a moment, changing the patrol cycle. If you get fully detected too easily, there are ways to boost movement speed or stealth that can help.
  • Journal entries in the data files show quest complete stages where the Heart is given to the Crucible Knights or the Dozens. However, it does not appear to actually be possible to turn the Heart in to either of the factions.
    • For example, when talking to Clyver in Crucible Keep:
      • Watcher: "I understand you're looking for the Heart of White March. Interested in buying it from me?"
        • Show him the fake jewel
          • Clyver: He looks at the jewel in your hands and scoffs. "A fake. And hardly a good one."

He turns away from you. "Show yourself out."

        • Show him the real jewel
          • Clyver: He gasps as looks at the glowing jewel in his hand. He closes his gauntlet around it, yet the soft light still seeps between his fingers. "Fine work indeed. I don't know how you managed this, but make sure you keep this between us."
          • (Remove item Heart of White March, give player Copper pands (cp)3,500, trigger end state 4 of A Two Story Job)
    • Or when talking to Wenan in Admeth's Den Expedition Hall:
      • Watcher: "Word has it you're looking for the Heart of White March. I'll sell it to you for a fraction of what Reymont was asking."
        • Show him the fake jewel
          • Wenan: Wenan looks at you incredulously. As he examines the gem, his surprise melts into fury. "You think I can't recognize a fake? You'd better head for the door. Fast."
        • Show him the real jewel
          • Wenan: "There's no way you-" He falls silent as you show him the jewel. "By the flame, how did you get this? Wait, no." He holds up a hand. "Best you don't tell me. I'll just accept this as a... fortunate gift. And in return, here's a gift for you."
          • (Remove item Heart of White March, give player Copper pands (cp)3,000, trigger end state 5 of A Two Story Job)

Bugs[ | ]

  • (v3.7.0.1318) If you acquired the Thieves' Letter, stole the Heart of the White March and progressed far enough in the main quest where you can ask out Abrecan Doemenel about House Doemenels interests in the Animancy Hearings, you can get stuck when speaking the first time to Abrecan Doemenel and directly starting the topic "Invitation to the hearing in Duc's palace" without scratching any other topics concerning the Thieves' Letter - You end up being unable to mention the (now successful) acquirement of the letter nor handing over the diamond. Dialog window will simply get closed if you try to do so. You still can end the quest by talking to Lord Reymont. Needs to be verified further

ID Objectives
0 A Two Story Job
10000 I've learned of a plot to rob a Brackenbury nobleman, Lord Reymont, and a letter that describes the plans in detail.
1 Tell somebody about the plot.
10001 I unintentionally thwarted the would-be thieves when I stumbled upon their hideout. Their note lays out instructions for breaking into Lord Reymont's manor and stealing something called the Heart of the White March.

The letter would probably be of interest to both Lord Reymont and someone with the initials "AD."

2 Recover Abrecan Doemenel's note.
10002 Abrecan Doemenel hired a group of thieves to break into Lord Reymont's manor. Unfortunately, they have a letter that ties him to the crime.

He told me they have a hideout in Copperlane.

3 Return the note to Abrecan.
10003 I retrieved Abrecan's note from the thieves. He's expecting me to bring it back to him.

Then again, if I inform Lord Reymont of the plot to steal the Heart of the White March, he might reward my honesty.

4 Steal the Heart of White March.
10004 I returned the letter detailing the heist to Abrecan Doemenel. Now, he's tasked me with stealing the Heart of White March. Abrecan believes the gem will be somewhere on the second floor; there's an open window that I can sneak into from the street. He wants to avoid any bloodshed.

The Heart of White March is expected to sell to either the Crucible Knights or the Dozens. Both groups want to use the gem to buy the friendship of the dwarves of White March. House Doemenel does not wish either faction to gain such powerful allies.

5 Steal the Heart of White March.
10005 Abrecan Doemenel, heir to the Doemenel crime empire, was none too happy that I'd killed his men and thwarted his heist. He offered me an ultimatum: complete the heist and steal the Heart of White March or face the wrath of House Doemenel.

I agreed to steal the gem. Abrecan believes it will be somewhere on the second floor; there's an open window that I can sneak into from the street.

The Heart of White March is expected to sell to either the Crucible Knights or the Dozens. Both groups want to use the gem to buy the friendship of the dwarves of White March. House Doemenel does not wish either faction to gain such powerful allies.

6 Give the Heart of White March to Abrecan.
10006 I have stolen the Heart of White March from Lord Reymont. To fulfill my agreement with Abrecan, I must return the jewel to him in Brackenbury.
Unused strings
- 30004 I gave the gem to the Crucible Knights so that they can ally with the dwarves of White March. Abrecan won't be too happy about this.
30005 I gave the gem to the Dozens so that they can ally with the dwarves of White March. Abrecan won't be too happy about this.
End states
Yes Jewels Stolen
30000 I have stolen the Heart of White March from Lord Reymont's Manor.
Yes Lord Reymont Informed
30001 I have informed Lord Reymont of the plot to steal his prized jewel, the Heart of White March, from his home.
Yes Made Abrecan Mad
30002 Abrecan Doemenel wasn't pleased when I tried to leave after delivering the letter to him. At least I put an end to the plot against Lord Reymont.
Yes Jewels Stolen for House Doemenel
30003 I have given the Heart of White March to Abrecan Doemenel. In return, Abrecan has promised to put in a good word with his father, Gedmar Doemenel.
Yes Killed Abrecan
30006 I killed Abrecan Doemenel. He won't be needing the Heart of the White March any more.
No Reymont and Abrecan Dead
30007 With both Lord Reymont and Abrecan Doemenel dead, there's nobody left to care about the plot to steal from Lord Reymont.
