Pillars of Eternity[ | ]

Act 1[ | ]

Intro Conversation[ | ]

You see four people gathered by the door to the inn. Their raised voices and chopping gestures suggest an argument reaching its climax.
The first figure raises his hands for calm. His face is partially obscured by a hood, but his height and stature suggest an elf.
Aloth: "I meant no offense. Let's put this matter to rest over a round, shall we? My treat."
The others, two folk men and an elven woman, don't look convinced.
The woman crosses her arms. "Hoping to soothe our pride with a few Aedyre coppers, eh?" She spits at his feet. "We don't need your coin."

Dialogue Options

Watcher : "What's going on?"

One of the other men points at the hooded elf. His eyes are red from drink, but his gaze is focused. "Mocking us even while he shelters in our village. Just goes to show you what these fancy Aedyre manners are worth.
"We don't take to that kind of treatment. Not from foreigners, and 'specially not from Aedyrans."
The woman looks you up and down. "And that means you, too. Don't push us."

Watcher : [Say nothing.] [Adds minor Disposition - Stoic points] or "Ooh, a fight!"

One of the other men glares at the hooded elf. His eyes are red from drink, but his gaze is focused. "You've got a lot of gall, mocking us in our own village. We don't take ill treatment from foreigners. 'Specially not Aedyrans."

Watcher : "Everyone calm down. Whatever this is about, I'm sure it's an overreaction." [Adds minor Disposition - Rational points]

One of the other men glares at the hooded elf. His eyes are red from drink, but his gaze is focused. "We're humble folk, but we're no fools. Not like he thinks, mocking us while he shelters in our village. We don't take to that kind of talk from foreigners, 'specially not Aedyrans."
The woman looks you up and down. "And that means you, too. Don't push us."
  • All options lead here.
The second man thrusts his chin at the elf. He stinks of sour ale. "Go on. Say it again. I'm itching for an excuse."
Aloth :"Fye, you're itching for the kindling touch of your sister, ye coxfither."
A collective cry of outrage rises from the three locals. The second man snarls. "I'll cut that barrel-licking tongue out of your head!"
Aloth : Horror and shock paint themselves across the elven man's face in broad, hasty strokes. "This is a misunderstanding. I didn't say..." He frowns and swallows. "...whatever it is you think I said."
He plants his feet. Something surly and raw flickers through his eyes. "We've nye quarrel."
The elven woman draws a blade. "That's where you're wrong."

Watcher : "I don't think attacking him is such a good idea..."

The three drunks scowl at you. "And why's that?"

Any of these:

Watcher : [Perception 13] "He's reaching for something. And since it's not the rapier at his side, it's either a wand or a throwing dagger, and you don't look ready to deal with either."

Watcher : [Might 13] "Because then you'll have me to deal with."

Watcher : [Intellect 14] "If someone's baiting you as obviously as he is, it's generally wisest to walk away."

They look at each other. One of the men gives the other two a warning shake of his head before turning to you. "We're done for now. But this one better watch his step around here because we're not going anywhere." With a final scowl at the elf, he turns to leave. [Fight avoided]

Watcher : "This will end badly."

  • If the Watcher has Culture - Aedyr: "No one gives us orders, Aedyran." [Fight triggers]
  • Else: "No one gives us orders, foreigner."
They squint at you through red, bleary eyes. "It sounds suspiciously like you're defending him." [Fight triggers]

Watcher : "Back down, all of you! This is absurd." [Adds minor Disposition - Passionate points]

Watcher : "This is unnecessary. Wouldn't you rather be inside drinking than out here arguing?" [Adds minor Disposition - Diplomatic points]

  • If the Watcher has Culture - Aedyr: "We don't take orders from any blazing Aedyrans. We don't take charity, neither."
  • Else: "We don't want your charity either, foreigner."
They squint at you through red, bleary eyes. "It sounds suspiciously like you're defending him." [Fight triggers]

Watcher : "You're not going to take that from him, are you?"

They turn their ire on you. "No, and we're not taking it from you, either." [Fight triggers]

Watcher : "I'm staying out of this one."

  • If the Watcher has Culture - Aedyr: They round on you, their eyes full of scattershot rage. "Oh no you don't, Aedyran." [Fight triggers]
  • Else: They round on you, their eyes full of scattershot rage. "Oh no you don't, foreigner." [Fight triggers]
  • If the townsfolk left:
As the three stumble away, the elf turns to you, the tension almost gone from his smooth face.
Aloth: "Not quite how I hoped to get to know the neighbors. Thank you for your timely assistance with that... awkward situation."
  • If the townsfolk attacked:
As the last of the attackers falls, the elf turns to you, tension frozen on his smooth face.
Aloth: "Not quite how I hoped to get to know the neighbors. Thank you for your timely assistance with that... awkward situation."
  • If the Watcher killed the townsfolk before the conversation began:
As the last of the attackers falls, the elf turns to you, tension frozen on his smooth face.
Aloth: "That was... unexpected. Still, you have my thanks for getting me out of an... awkward situation."
