It was produced by Ryan Warden, and published by Microsoft Studios Music, Microsoft's in-house label for game soundtracks. History[]
Early on in development, Raison Varner, the sound designer on Borderlands 3, was hired as the Audio Director on Avowed, and had a credit on his LinkedIn as the game's composer.[2] In a comment on his YouTube channel, Varner said that he thought people would enjoy his score on Avowed.[3]
On October 11, 2024, Ryan Warden, the Production Director on Avowed, spoke in a fireside chat with Stephanie Bendixsen at PAX Australia 2024, going behind the scenes in a deep dive about the production process of the game.[4][5] During the interview, Warden announced that Venus Theory, a musician and popular audio production personality, had collaborated with Obsidian to compose the soundtrack for the game, being contracted around the start of 2024 to produce a score that was "recognizable but not generic fantasy" that drew inspiration from the game's key art.[6] On Twitter, the Avowed account announced the partnership in order to "...bring the Living Lands to life with an immersive auditory experience",[7] while Venus Theory himself made an announcement via Twitter and Instagram.[8]
In January 2025, via a post on his YouTube channel, Venus Theory shared that he had been wrapping up a course based around the production of the music for Avowed.
On February 5, 2025, in an exclusive interview with with pop culture publication NME, Obsidian and Venus Theory shared three tracks in the soundtrack, "Avowed" - the title theme to the game, "Soil Song", and "We Twine", the end credits theme.[9] Ryan Warden and Venus Theory discussed the soundtrack's production in interviews with MarcoMeatball on February 7,[10] and later Checkpoint Gaming on February 10.[11]
