Attributes in Avowed are a set of 6 stats that represent a particular aspect of a character, and have a significant impact on their capabilities in combat. Attributes also serve a role during conversations and interactions, where they are checked to unlock or trigger unique dialogue options.

The six attributes are: Might, Constitution, Dexterity, Perception, Intellect, and Resolve.

Overview[]

All attributes start at 0, and reach a maximum value of 15. Each attribute is given a base value of 0, unlike previous titles where it varied based on choices made in character creation. Attributes may be improved via Attribute Points, which are gained as the character levels up, or by wearing equipment that grants bonuses to specific attributes.

The player gains a total of 27 points:

  • 10 points at character creation (10 points)
  • 1 point per level from level 2 to 9 (8 points)
  • 1 point every two levels from level 10 to 17 (4 points)
  • 1 point every three levels from level 18 to 30 (5 points)

The player may choose to spend an amount of Currency to respec their attributes at any time, which refunds all points and resets attributes to their base value. The cost of resetting your points depends on your current level.

Technically speaking, Avowed refers to Attributes as "Attribute Points", while "Primary Attributes" is used to refer to certain in-combat stats, including Health, Essence, Stamina, Damage Reduction, Additional Damage Reduction, Critical Hit Chance, and Critical Hit Damage Bonus.

Attributes[]

The effect of attributes deminishes as they increase in value. Every 5 points, the benefit gained per point is reduced. In the table below, the effects column indicates the increase at attributes level 1-5, then 6-10, then 11-15.

Certain effects like "Action Speed", "Attack Speed", and "Second Wind Efficiency" are an averaged combination of stats. They have been broken out into their individual components here.

A character's physical and spiritual strength, brute force, as well as their ability to channel powerful magic.

Increases your damage from all sources. Also increases your Carry Capacity, which is the amount of weapons and armor you can carry before becoming encumbered.

Great all-around choice for dealing more damage.

A combination of the character's overall health and endurance.

Increases your Maximum Health and your resistance to the Poisoned and Bleeding statuses.

Improves survivability for players who like to be in the fray.

A character's hand-eye coordination, balance, and overall grace.

Increases your Attack Speed (weapons and abilities), as well as your Action Speed (equips, consumable use, parkour) and Reload Speed.

Good for builds where mobility and the flexible use of your arsenal are key.

A character's senses, as well as their instinctive ability to pick up on details.

Increases your Critical Hit Chance and your Maximum Range for weapons. Wands, guns, and bows will be more effective at longer distances.

Ideal for rangers and casters who favor ranged weapons.

Increases your Maximum Essence and your resistance to the Ignited, Shocked, and Frozen statuses.

Great for wizards who focus on spellcasting.

A character's internal drive, determination, and fearlessness.

Increases your Maximum Stamina and the frequency and efficiency of Second Wind: when taking lethal damage, you will fight off death more frequently and jump back in with more health.

Good for warriors who need to swing heavy weapons and survive big hits.

Behind the scenes[]

  • Attributes originated in Pillars of Eternity, but are mechanically different to accomodate the action role-playing style of gameplay of Avowed.
  • Resolve used to give only Second Wind Cooldown per level, which was later changed to Second Wind Efficiency, which is a combination of cooldown reduction and health restoration.
