Pillars of Eternity Wiki

In response to patch v1.3.7.0.1377 to Pillars of Eternity (June 6, 2024), the random loot tables shown on the wiki have been updated. These changes may take time to propegate.

As a result, random loot data is no longer accurate to old versions of the game, including all console ports. We'll be working to provide a mechanism to switch between pre-patch and post-patch loot for console players.

Grimoires are equippable off-hand items in Avowed, used to hold and cast the player's wizard spells.[1][2]

Overview[ | ]

Grimoires may be found in the world, and contain a set of (up to) 4 different spells that can be cast directly from a grimoire, but only while that grimoire is equipped.[3] These spells may be used without having to learn them from the wizard ability tree first. The wizard ability tree lets the player "memorize" these spells, unlocking them permanently so they may be cast without requiring a particular grimoire, while also allowing the spells to be upgraded and improved upon.[3]

This system gives players access to a wide variety of spells by simply swapping between grimoires. Players can try out lower-level versions of spells before investing points to permanently unlock them in the wizard ability tree.

Three tiers of spells are available through grimoire use, and are unlocked via an unnamed 5th level passive in the Wizard ability tree:

  • Rank 1 unlocks 6 level 5 spells.
  • Rank 2 unlocks 6 level 10 spells.
  • Rank 3 unlocks 3 level 15 spells.

It is not currently known whether the player must enscribe spells into a grimoire (which would limit the amount of spells you have available at a given time), or if grimoires only contain fixed spells, or if having a grimoire equipped simply provides the means to cast any currently-unlocked spells that require it. We also don't know if a spell must be found in a grimoire in order to unlock that spell in the wizard ability tree.
