Movement is a fundemental aspect to gameplay in Avowed, giving players the means to navigate and explore the world.
Most of the game is traversed on foot. The player can swim and dive underwater,[1] but cannot fly or glide.[2] Difficult terrain can be traversed via the parkour system, which allows players to jump over obstacles, duck under narrow spaces, climb up and down ledges, and vault over objects.
Basic movement[ | ]
The most basic form of movement is walking. It's slower than running, but allows for more precise control, and consumes no stamina.
Running[ | ]
Running (also called Sprinting) is a faster mode of movement. Triggered by pressing and holding a specific button while moving, running consumes Stamina, which limits the distance and amount of time the player can run.
Swimming[ | ]
Swimming allows the player to move through and under water. Because of the increased resistance, there is no faster movement mode when swimming. The amount of time that can be spent underwater is limited by the player's oxygen level, which is replenished by returning to the surface.
Crouching[ | ]
Crouching is used to get lower to the ground. It can be activated by pressing a specific button or holding down the crouch input.
While exploring the world, the player can crouch to get under obstacles with low headroom. Prior to combat, the player may crouch to reduce enemy visibility and detection, a key part of Stealth During combat, crouching down can provide increased ranged accuracy, makes the player a smaller target for enemy attacks, and allows you to get behind low cover.
Move Speed[ | ]
Move Speed is the rate at which the player moves while walking, running, and swimming. Move speed can be affected by various factors, such as character attributes, equipment, or environmental conditions.
Movement actions[ | ]
Several secondary actions may be performed as a part of movement, both in and out of combat. These actions are collectively referred to as the Parkour system, and they can be chained together to fluidly move across an environment. All movement actions consume Stamina, and their speed is determined by the player's Action Speed (which is in turn, determined by their Dexterity attribute).
While performing these actions, the player cannot take any other actions (like attacking, blocking, or using an item). Additionally, most actions have a short (less than 1 second) cooldown, so they cannot be used over and over.
Jumping[ | ]
Jumping is used to traverse gaps in the terrain, reach higher areas, and overcome obstacles.
Vaulting[ | ]
Vaulting involves jumping over low obstacles, such as fences or barriers. This is done by pressing the jump button while moving towards the obstacle.
Mantling[ | ]
Mantling refers to pulling oneself up onto a ledge or platform. Mantles are performed automatically by jumping (or falling) near a ledge.
Dodging[ | ]
Dodging and dashing involves a quick burst of speed in a direction. It can be used to close gaps between enemies, reach distant platforms, escape dangerous situations, or to quickly reposition. It is often used during combat as an evasive movement, to avoid enemy attacks or projectiles. It may also be employed as an aggressive manuever, allowing the player stay close to enemies and attack them in between their attacks.
A dodge may can be triggered with a button press combined with a directional input (like pressing left + dodge button to dodge left). When dodging, the player character performs a short 1-2 meter dash in the desired direction. Any direction along the ground may be dodged in, the player character isn't limited to only lateral (side-to-side) movements.
Performing a dodge consumes a small amount of Stamina, which can be impoved via the Dodge ability in the ranger ability tree.
Sliding[ | ]
Sliding is a movement mechanic that involves moving low to the ground at speed. It is often used for avoiding attacks, entering confined spaces, or moving quickly across certain surfaces. A slide can be triggered by tapping the crouch button while sprinting.
Power Slide, a level 5 ranger ability, can be learned to improve slides.
Other actions[ | ]
Some abilities, like Charge, aid in traversal. In combat, it closes the gap on enemies, while outside of combat, it lets you leap across large gaps that cannot be jumped across.[2]
