Damage Reduction (also called DR) and Additional Damage Reduction (also called ADR) are character statistics that refer to a general decrease of incoming damage. Having a higher Damage Reduction means that the character negates more damage dealt to them.
Overview[]
It is primarily derived by the armor worn by the character recieving the damage, but it can can be raised (and lowered) through abilities, clothing, accessories, and other effects. Many creatures also have natural DR.
The normal form of Damage Reduction is expressed as a percentage-based reduction on every attack.
Some items specify Additional Damage Reduction (also called ADR), which is a form of Damage Reduction that reduces damage given a fixed value that is subtracted from every attack, prior to the DR reduction. As such, attacks with a damage under the target ADR is completely negated.
As an example, wearing a Common Scale Armor grants the wearer 15% Damage Reduction and 3 Additional Damage Reduction. Excluding any Attack Quality bonuses/penalties, this means that being hit for 20 points of damage will only result in 14.45 points going through to their health, as the armor will absorb 3 damage, then 15% of the remaining damage. The basic formula is (where DR is all DR the character has additively summed together):
Final Damage = (Damage - ADR) × (1 - (DR / 100))
Percentage-based damage reduction is generally more effective the higher the incoming damage, as more of the damage will be blocked relative to the total amount. It does little to protect against low-damage attacks, which is where Additional Damage Reduction is important, as it can completely negate attacks that deal damage under its value.

Armor[]
Armor provides the bulk of your overall Damage Reduction, with heavier armors generally granting more than lighter ones. All armor types give a different amount of DR, while ADR is the same across all types within an armor class.
