Dyrford Ruins is a hidden temple beneath Dyrford Village dedicated to god Skaen.

The ruins are the remnants of the extensive tunnel system beneath the old Dyrford keep erected in Aedyre times. They have been restored and occupied by the cult of Skaen, used as a power base to worm its way into the town's structures.

Points of interest[]

  • This is a dungeon accessible from either Trygil's Curriery (placing you in the northwestern corner) or Dyrford Crossing by way of the statue (placing you in the northeastern corner). The section will cover the major areas of the ruins assuming entry from Dyrford Crossing (if you don't mind liberating Trygil's soul from his body, then start at the bottom).
  • The northeastern area is entered from the Dyrford Crossing after breaching the statue. A short corridor leads to the entrance to the temple, with a temple sentry patrolling and a large group of guards in the catacombs to the southeast. The catacombs exit to a small, natural stone bridge leading into the entrance to the temple.
    • The doors to the left of the stone bridge, and at the top of the stairs leading to the temple proper are locked, and can be opened with difficulty 8/7 respectively, or with an Old Dungeon Key looted from the northeastern-most room in the cultists quarters.
  • In the center of this area is the heart of the Skaenite temple, a massive blood pool filled with sacrifices (see section below for details). The northwestern catacombs contain the personal quarters of the Skaenites, with the Crypt's Master Key on the table - opening the way to the northeastern crypt and main chamber. The far crypt contains more Skaenites and minor loot.
  • The central corridor leads deeper into the temple's most secure areas. Around the bend are three more Skaenites, guarding the entrance to the main chamber where the captive nobleman's daughter Aelys Harond is held by Wymund. The chamber contains machines used to transfer essence from the sacrificial pool into selected victims. Depending on how the confrontation goes, you may have to kill Wymund. He drops Wymund's Key, used to open the chest in the same room - containing the unique dagger Aattuuk. The room in the back contains a switch opening a shortcut to the caves beneath the curriery.
  • The caves are filled with beetles and connect to the tunnels carved out beneath Dyrford. They are filled with Skaen cultists. Exploring the rooms, pick every container you find for a Shimmering Cloak, list of names, and plenty of torture implements that see active use by the Skaenites. The chamber to the southwest leads to an interactable post that can be used to reach the bridge leading to the main temple.

Blood Pool – a pool with sacrificed souls[]

Main article: Effigy's Resentment

If your main character has a Cruel disposition of at least 1, this pool will allow you to sacrifice one of your story companions to Skaen for a boost to an attribute and the Effigy's Resentment talent.

Note that you can only do this once - after choosing Reach out to the blood, if you lack the Cruel disposition or change your mind, you will lose access to the pool permanently. Since you can make the sacrifice at any time (even in Act 3), choose Retreat from the blood pool unless you're sure that you're ready.

Companion reactions[]

Some companions have something to say as you approach the blood-drenched steps to the ritual chamber:

  • Aloth: "That's... charming."
  • Sagani: "Looks like blood. And lots of it."
  • Kana Rua: "We've missed quite the bloody celebration, it seems."
  • Hiravias: "Odd to see this much blood without an equally large amount of corpses nearby..."
  • Durance: "Place has the stains of animancy on it."
  • Grieving Mother: "There are minds here, edged."
  • Devil of Caroc: "We could never have this in the White March. All that blood'd freeze over."
  • Zahua: "This blood is vibrant and many-colored. It holds the suffering of many. I wish you could see it as I do."

All companions will speak up as soon as you reach the Blood Pool:

  • Edér: "Someone should clean that up."
  • Pallegina: "Ugh. Who would create such a vile thing?"
  • Aloth: "Some strange power seems to be animating the blood. I'm going to hazard a guess and say that, whatever it is, it isn't benevolent."
  • Kana Rua: "Grotesque masks and pools of blood... They aren't half-hearted in their madness, are they?" Kana wrinkles his nose."
  • Grieving Mother: "A place of death... We should not linger here."
  • Durance: "A bubbling cauldron of Skaen's hateful seed. He may be sniveling and cowardly in his ways, but he has never lacked for focus."
  • Sagani: "Sagani peers at the bubbling pool. "This is the work of something foul. We should keep moving."

Behind the scenes[]

Developer commentary by Jorge Salgado

  • Also known as simply the "Temple of Skaen" in the game files, and during development.
  • The temple was the very first dungeon designed for the game. It was originally going to be much bigger, but was scaled back during development to make the area more manageable.
  • This area contains developer commentary, triggered upon crossing the bridge over the chasm connecting the two halves of the area.
The temple of Skaen is an underground dungeon that mixes castles, basements, and cells on the west side, with the ruins of an old temple on the east side. It was the first dungeon we designed for the game, and its original block-out was larger but eventually [we] trimmed it more down to something more manageable. Part of the challenge here was building a seamless transition between the two distinct areas, which also are slanted at different angles so as to make them appear more natural. Sean Dunny, one of our environment artists, came up with the idea of having a negative space transition, so like the bridge by the chasm... that blends those two areas, and he did an amazing job with this render. So much so that one of the locations that we've shown since the very beginning of backer updates is this very dungeon.
