Pillars of Eternity Wiki

In response to patch v1.3.7.0.1377 to Pillars of Eternity (June 6, 2024), the random loot tables shown on the wiki have been updated. These changes may take time to propegate.

As a result, random loot data is no longer accurate to old versions of the game, including all console ports. We'll be working to provide a mechanism to switch between pre-patch and post-patch loot for console players.

Food for Thought is a side quest in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire.

Synopsis[ | ]

Items in italics are quoted directly from the game.

The Gullet is home to the Roparu in Neketaka, the lowest caste in Huana society. By Huana tradition, food is distributed from the highest caste to the lowest, as the queen sees fit.

This uneven distribution of resources, coupled with an influx of refugees from other islands in the Deadfire, is starving the Roparu to death.

Enoi, an elder in the Gullet, has asked me to help him resolve the food shortage.

Walkthrough[ | ]

Talk to Enoi at his home in the Gullet to start the quest.

Before tackling with the food problem, you should explore the Narrows to find out the fate of Ulög - the man who was supposed to smuggle the food for the Roparu.

Establish a food source[ | ]

There are three factions willing to provide the food.

  • The Children of the Dawnstars.
  • The Príncipi sen Patrena.
  • The Huana.
The Children of the Dawnstars route
  • Head to Pitli's sanctuary in the Gullet to meet Pitli. When asked about the food situation of the Roparu, Pitli will send you to High Priestess Saewyn at the Temple of Gaun, part of the Sacred Stair. You should take this opportunity to help her out with the quest Harsh Medicine.
  • Ask Saewyn to provide the food. To convince her, you can:
  • Saewyn then asks how the food will reach the Roparu. Your choices are:
    • Distribute the food through the Huana.
    • Or smuggle the food through the Príncipi. However, Saewyn is reluctant to work with pirates. You can convince her with:
      • Diplomacy 4.
      • Bluff 4.
      • Positive reputation (3) with the Children of the Dawnstars.
  • If you're working with the Huana, go see Prince Aruihi to request him distributing the food.
  • If you're working with the Príncipi, go see Captain Mad Morena to request her smuggling the food.
The Príncipi sen Patrena route
The Huana route
  • Head to Kahanga Palace to meet Prince Aruihi, to convince him, you can:
    • Complete Trade Secrets.
    • Streetwise 4 or Intimidate 5 - "It would be a shame if the trading companies recognized this failure of leadership." [Moderate Negative reputation with the Huana]
    • Have sufficiently high reputation with the Huana (3+)
  • Note that you can try talking to Queen Onekaza II about it, but she won't pay you any heed and instead send you to Prince Aruihi.

Return to Enoi[ | ]

  • If you found Ulög's corpse, tell him Ulög's fate for a Minor Positive reputation with the Gullet.
  • Then inform Enoi of the deal.

0 Food for Thought
10000 The Gullet is home to the Roparu in Neketaka, the lowest caste in Huana society.

3 Establish a source of food for the Gullet.
10003 Enoi asked me to help re-establish a source of food for the Roparu. Perhaps I could ask Prince Aruihi in Kahanga Palace or the Dawnstars at the Sacred Stair to help. Or, I could find a way to speak with Mad Morena, Ulög's contact among the Príncipi in the Undercroft.
20000 The Children of the Dawnstars are known for their charitable work throughout the city. A missionary by the name of Pitli has a dwelling in the southwestern part of the Gullet.
20001 Pitli explained that her high priestess, Saewyn, at the Temple of Gaun in the Sacred Stair, holds the authority to ration a share of the Dawnstars' food supply. However, Pitli is preoccupied with her own work and hasn't yet spoken to Saewyn about the shortage.
20002 Saewyn at the Temple of Gaun will supply food to the Roparu so long as she has a means to disperse the rations throughout the Gullet.
20003 Captain Mad Morena refuses to smuggle more food for the Roparu. I might be able to change her mind if I make it worth her while.
20004 Though displeased with how the Mataru have handled the situation in the Gullet, Prince Aruihi won't listen to a foreigner who hasn't gained his trust.
20010 Saewyn doesn't trust me. She suggested she'd be more inclined to offer her support if I proved my goodwill toward the Children of the Dawnstars.
20011 I've convinced High Priestess Saewyn at the Temple of Gaun to work with the Príncipi in the Undercroft to smuggle food into the Gullet.
20012 According to Enoi, the Children of the Dawnstars have tried to supply food to the Gullet before, but were unsuccessful. They might be willing to try again. They congregate at the Temple of Gaun in the Sacred Stair.
20013 I encountered some thugs guarding a lift in Delver's Row. It might be the route Ulög used to ferry food to the Roparu in the Gullet.
20014 The thugs told me that only Dereo can grant permission to use the Delver's Row lift. I can find Dereo by turning right, then left after exiting Delver's Row.
20015 I offered to speak with Prince Aruihi in Kahanga Palace on behalf of the Roparu, but Enoi doubts it will make a difference.
20016 Now that the Royal Deadfire Company has launched their attack on Kahanga Palace, I can no longer go to Prince Aruihi for aid. Perhaps I can convince Mad Morena in the Undercroft to help the Roparu.
4 Inform Enoi about the deal.
10004 I brokered a deal that will ensure the Roparu in the Gullet will be fed for some time.
Unused strings
- 20007 There was a commotion outside of Enoi's dwelling about a body found near the prize-share pile to the northwest.
20009 I found a note addressed to a Captain Mad Morena that claimed, due to increased patrols, Akumu needed to use an outcrop near the prize-share to drop off the smuggled shipment. I should investigate the food pile.
End states
No 30000 I alienated everyone capable of helping the Roparu resolve their food shortage.
Yes 30001 I convinced the Príncipi in the Undercroft to re-establish their arrangement to smuggle food to the Roparu in the Gullet.
Yes 30002 I convinced Queen Onezaka at Kahanga Palace to double her efforts to feed the starving Roparu.
Yes 30003 I brokered a deal with High Priestess Saewyn of the Dawnstars to provide additional food to Neketaka, and Queen Onezaka at Kahanga Palace has agreed that the majority will be given to the Roparu.
Yes 30004 I brokered a deal Mad Morena, the Príncipi captain in the Undercroft, to smuggle food into the Gullet so long as the Children of the Dawnstars at the Temple of Gaun supply them with it.
