A new feature in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, multiclass characters can select abilities from two classes, but gain access to higher power levels of class abilities more slowly and cannot access their classes' highest level abilities. Single-class characters are entirely focused on their chosen class and gain access to higher ability power levels more quickly. Multiclass characters are generally not recommended for new players.

Multiclassing rules

Multiclassing allows a character to essentially have two classes at once. Multiclassing is selected at character creation and cannot be added or altered later.

  • As stated above, multiclass characters cannot access the highest power level abilities (VIII and IX) of their classes and unlock new power levels more slowly. At every third level gained (1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19) they unlock a new power level and gain an ability in both of their classes. At other levels, they only gain one ability point which can be spent in either class.
  • Base health and defense values are the average of the two classes.
  • Initial skill bonuses from class are averaged between the two classes.

Class names

Each multiclass combination has an unique name associated with it. The name has no effect on gameplay.
