In Pillars of Eternity[ | ]

Most classes in Pillars of Eternity do not use "consumable" resources to cast abilities. Only Chanters, Ciphers and Monks have an accrued resource (Phrases, Focus, and Wounds respectively), and their abilities have a resource cost - the amount of the resource the character needs to cast the ability, which is then consumed on cast. Spellcasters - including Druids, Priests, and Wizards - have a maximum amount of casts per rest for all spells at each ability level, which scales with their level. All other classes have a fixed amount of ability uses per encounter or per rest, the amount of which is defined per ability.

Spellcasts[ | ]

The amount of uses (or "casts") of spellcasters' spells scales with the caster's level. Generally at later levels, spells of earlier tiers will have more uses. Spellcasters include Druids, Priests, Wizards. Ciphers and Chanters are technically spellcasters, but are not limited to the amount of casts, since they expend resources to cast spells intead (Focus and Phrases respectively).

Keep in mind that the maximum casts are across all abilities at that tier, and not per spell. Once the casts for an ability tier are used up, spells at that level can no longer be used. Uses must be replenished by resting.

Prior to the introduction of Spell Mastery, the restoration type of lower level spells was able to change from "per rest" to "per encounter" at higher levels. This was removed in favour of the new system, as it was deemed too powerful. Spells that were 4 ability levels lower than the current ability level were restored per encounter, while spells that were within 4 ability levels were restored per rest. In other words, spells switched to "per encounter" at 8 character levels above the level they were learned. Ability levels that switched to per encounter are marked with an asterisk in the table below. Currently, all non-Mastery spells are restored on rest regardless of level (unless they specify otherwise).

Spell Mastery allows the spellcaster to pick a single spell to switch to "per encounter" restoration. This occurs at level 9, 11, 13, and 15, for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th level spells respectively.

Characters at levels beyond the level cap (some high level creatures) do not gain any more casts than the amount of casts listed at level 16 in the tables below.

Maximum casts by ability level[ | ]

Note: The table below applies only to spellcasters

Spells at lower ability levels can be cast 4 times, while spells at the current ability level can be cast 2 times at the first character level they are learned, and then 3 times at the next character level (and 4 after that).

In Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire[ | ]

Abilities and spells consume a portion of resources on use, the cost of which is typically set relative to the potency of the ability, and is listed in the examine menu of the ability. For some classes however (namely those will "Spell" type resources - Druid, Priest, and Wizard), spells have no cost, and instead the character is limited to the amount of casts that can be made for abilities of a certain power level.

All classes consume some sort of resource, and their exists three distinct types. Note that some classes use more than one resource, for example Monks have both Wounds-consuming and Mortification-consuming abilities.

Spellcasts[ | ]

Spellcasters (Druids, Priests, and Wizards) may only cast a limited amount of spells for each power level - the amount of which is determined by their character level, and is identical for each class. While spells don't explicitly define a cost, they technically cost 1 resource to cast.

Classes that cast spells this way are the most analogous to how Pillars of Eternity handled casting.

Spellcasts do not count as a power pool resource, meaning they cannot benefit from abilities that adjust the character's power pool specifically. However, they do benefit from abilities that modify resources (e.g. His Heart Did Fill With the Light of the Dawn!). When such an effect is applied, spell casts are regained for power levels at random (but only to those that have spent casts).

The spellcaster gets a maximum of 1 cast for spells of their current power-level-by-character-level (i.e. their highest-learned power level) (with the exception of level 1, which gets 2), and they get 2 casts for spells at each power level below.

Power pool resources[ | ]

Characters with power pool resources start combat with a full resource pool, and spend varying amounts of points to cast abilities. Once all points are spent, the character is no longer able to cast abilities that consume that resource until combat has ended (or until they regain points through some other means, e.g. abilities that grant resources).

All power pool resources scale identically. At Power Level 1, the character has 3 points of their resource, and they gain 1 point for every additional power level, capping out at 11 points (though this is beyond the maximum power level of learned abilities).

Accrued resources[ | ]

With accrued resources, the character starts combat with little or no resources, and accrues points by some means during combat. Otherwise they work in the same way that power pool resources do, in that points are spent to cast abilities.

The maximum and initial amount of points differs for each resource. See the class pages for more info.
