Sacrificial Bloodlines is a side quest in Pillars of Eternity.

Synopsis[ | ]

Simoc, anamfath of the Three-Tusk Stelgaer, has led his tribe for nearly two hundred years, but he has failed to produce offspring with souls fit to succeed him. Simoc confided his fears that his tribe, which defends the Glanfathan border, will grow weak without aggressive leadership.

Walkthrough[ | ]

If you talk to Simoc in the Hall of Warriors in the Elms' Reach district of Twin Elms, he'll task you with kidnapping a newborn child of his clan and sacrificing it in Blood Sands in order to distill a spirit potion for him to make him stronger.

When you approach the exit of the hall after the conversation, Simoc's son Lliras initiates conversation with you and asks you to poison his father instead in order to save the baby's life.

You can now choose between Five possible paths to resolve the quest:

  • Attack Simoc
You can tell Simoc that he deserves to die right in your first conversation with him, or just attack him at your discretion at any later time. That will result in an intense fight against him and everyone in the Hall of Warriors except for Lliras. You receive:
reputation: Twin Elms: Moderate Positive
Ovates of the Golden Grove: Moderate Positive
Ethik Nôl: Extraordinary Negative
items: Thy Clef, plus Copper pands (cp)9,300+ worth of loot from the Hall of Warriors
  • Kidnap & sacrifice the baby, and give the essence potion to Simoc
Go to Hearthsong district and use the rusty key you got from Simoc to enter the previously inaccessible Glanfathan Home in the south part of the map (just north of the Celestial Sapling inn). Take the baby from the cradle. When you leave the house, you will be intercepted by Lliras and attacked, no matter what you say.
Now return to the Elms' Reach district, enter Blood Sands, and talk to Keeper Wrdha. Give her the baby, and she'll sacrifice it and hand you the Distilled Essence Potion.
Note: Doing this will cause Grieving Mother to leave the party permanently, and her companion quest Dream and Memory to fail.
Go back to Simoc and give him the potion. You receive:
reputation: Twin Elms: Moderate Positive
Ovates of the Golden Grove: Major Negative
Ethik Nôl: Extraordinary Positive
items: Thy Clef, plus Copper pands (cp)3,200+ worth of loot from fighting Lliras
  • Poison Simoc
To do so, go to the Golden Grove just east of the Hall of Warriors, and ask Bledha to give you a flask of poison. It is irrelevant what kind of poison you choose.
Go back to Simoc and give him the potion, but he will hesitate to drink it. If you choose an answer without attribute check, he will attack you, outcome as above (1). With Resolve 19 or Intellect 19, you can persuade him to drink it, but after that, you need another Resolve 20 or Perception 19 to avoid him attacking you. You receive:
reputation: Twin Elms: Moderate Positive
Ovates of the Golden Grove: Major Positive
Ethik Nôl: Moderate Negative
items: Thy Clef
  • Poison Simoc, and Keep the baby
To do so first agree to help Simoc. And when you attempt to leave also agree to help Lliras.
First go to the Golden Grove just east of the Hall of Warriors, and ask Bledha to give you a flask of poison. It is irrelevant what kind of poison you choose.
Go to Hearthsong district and use the rusty key you got from Simoc to enter the previously inaccessible Glanfathan Home in the south part of the map (just north of the Celestial Sapling inn). When the quest completes you will still have the Baby, but wont have anything to do with it. And quest seems to bug out and thinks Lliras is still alive. Looks just like you only poisoned Simoc.
  • Poison Simoc, and sacrifice the baby
To do so first agree to help Simoc. And when you attempt to leave also agree to help Lliras.
First go to the Golden Grove just east of the Hall of Warriors, and ask Bledha to give you a flask of poison. It is irrelevant what kind of poison you choose.
Go to Hearthsong district and use the rusty key you got from Simoc to enter the previously inaccessible Glanfathan Home in the south part of the map (just north of the Celestial Sapling inn). Note: Doing this will cause Grieving Mother to leave the party permanently, and her companion quest Dream and Memory to fail. So leave her at an inn for this.
You receive:
reputation: Twin Elms: Moderate Negative
Ovates of the Golden Grove: Major Negative
Ethik Nôl: Major Negative
items: Thy Clef, plus Copper pands (cp)3,200+ worth of loot from fighting Lliras
When the quest completes you will still have the Distilled Essence Potion but it won't be usable. And quest notes say: "After sacrificing Vela in Blood Sands, Decided to kill Simoc. With the old anamfath and his adoptive successor gone, Three-Tusk Stelgaer will have to find new leadership".
Optionally you can keep the unusable poison bottle instead and give the Distilled Essence Potion to Simoc instead. Refer to rewards for helping Simoc when doing this.

In all cases you then complete the quest.

Notes[ | ]

  • You can snatch the baby and kill Lliras, but then take the "poison Simoc" or "attack Simoc" route (e.g. to maximize loot or kills), this will not change the results. You can also get the poison first, poison Simoc, and then still steal the baby and kill Lliras.
  • If you kill Simoc after the quest has ended in a way that he gave you Thy Clef, you can loot another Thy Clef from him (bug?). This attack will not yield any reputation changes. Verify
  • If you kill everyone of the Three-Tusk Stelgaer clan in the hall, leave it and enter again or load a save from there, it will be repopulated with default Glanfathans (warriors, children).
  • Taking the baby without sacrificing it, i.e. keeping it for yourself, will be reflected in the game ending.
  • If you took the child for yourself, she'll appear in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire.

0 Sacrificial Bloodlines
10000 Simoc, anamfath of the Three-Tusk Stelgaer, has led his tribe for nearly two hundred years, but he has failed to produce offspring with souls fit to succeed him. Simoc confided his fears that his tribe, which defends the Glanfathan border, will grow weak without aggressive leadership.

However, he told me he's found a way to endow his next child with a stronger soul.

1 Fetch the orlan child from a house in southeast Hearthsong.
10001 Anamfath Simoc is fostering a daughter of the Fisher Crane's anamfath. He's asked me to bring her to Keeper Wrdha of the Ethik Nôl for a ritual that will allow him to consume her essence.

The child is in a house by the river. Simoc has arranged for her to be left unattended.

20000 Simoc admitted that the ritual will involve sacrificing the child.
20004 Simoc's son, Lliras, confronted me about his father's plan. He asked me to poison Simoc instead. I can obtain a suitable poison from Bledha, one of the Ovates of the Golden Grove.
2 Deliver the baby to Blood Sands.
10002 I have the Fisher Crane child. Simoc asked me to take her to Keeper Wrdha in Blood Sands.

Blood Sands in a cave at the northern edge of Elms' Reach, next to Teir Evron itself.

20003 Lliras attacked as I was leaving with Vela. I had to kill him.
20005 I have taken the baby from the dwelling in Hearthsong, but I still can acquire the poison that would kill Simoc.
4 Optionally, get poison from Bledha in Elms' Reach.
10004 Simoc's son, Lliras, confronted me about his father's plan. He implored me not to go through with it.

Instead, Lliras asked me to obtain a poison from Bledha, one of the Ovates of the Golden Grove. Even though Lliras has already been deemed an unsuitable successor, he does not want to see Simoc's kind of leadership continue in this manner.

I can find Bledha in the southeast corner of Elms' Reach.

20001
5 Give the essence potion to Simoc.
10005 Keeper Wrdha has given me a potion for Simoc made from the child's essence. Simoc is waiting for it in the Hall of Warriors.
20007 I've also acquired the poison from Bledha. Tricking Simoc into drinking it, now that Lliras and Vela are dead, might leave the Three-Tusk Stelgaer without a clear successor.
6 Trick Simoc into drinking the poison.
10006 I convinced Bledha to give me a rather potent poison. Since Simoc's already expecting a potion, I should be able to dupe him into drinking this.
20006 While I already have the poison, I still can take the baby and bring her to Wrdha, in Blood Sands, to follow through with Simoc's plan.
8 Deliver the baby to Blood Sands or trick Simoc into drinking the poison.
10008 I have taken Vela and have also acquired the poison. Following through with Simoc's plan means giving the child to Wrdha in Blood Sands. Even so, I can still poison Simoc instead.
9 Give the essence potion to Simoc or trick him into drinking the poison.
10009 With the essence potion, I can ensure that Simoc fathers an elemfath capable of leading Three-Tusk Stelgaer.

Alternatively, I could give him the poison I acquired from Bledha.

20009 Tricking Simoc into drinking the poison, now that Lliras and Vela are dead, would leave the Three-Tusk Stelgaer without a clear successor.
End states
Yes Blood Potion
30000 I gave Simoc a potion made with the essence of his adopted orlan daughter. With this, he'll be able to produce an heir capable of succeeding him, thus ensuring the continued strength of Three-Tusk Stelgaer.
Yes Hide Baby
30001 I gave Simoc's adopted orlan daughter to a childless couple in Hearthsong. She'll have a chance at a normal and happy life.
Yes Poison Simoc
30002 After hearing Simoc's plan to sacrifice his adopted orlan daughter, I went along with Lliras' plan to poison him. While this leaves the future of Three-Tusk Stelgaer uncertain, it prevents Simoc from executing his wicked plan.
Yes Killed Simoc
30003 After hearing Simoc's proposal that I sacrifice his adopted daughter, I killed him in the Hall of Warriors. This old anamfath had lived past his time.
No QUEST FAILED
30004 Someone critically important to this quest has died.
Yes Poison Simoc AND Killed Baby
30005 After sacrificing Vela in Blood Sands, I decided to kill Simoc. With the old anamfath and his adoptive successor gone, Three-Tusk Stelgaer will have to find new leadership.
Yes Poison Failed, Killed Simoc
30006 My attempt at poisoning Simoc failed, and I was forced to kill him in combat instead.
