News

Maybe we should expand our news section and provide a little summary for each entry? for example http://www.obsidian.net/ news section always contains a minimalistic summary - Just a thought. --AnotherArk (talk) 15:57, 16 May 2014 (UTC)

Question

Is there a simple tutorial page that points out the obvious stuff anywhere? Something that specifies, for example, what the name is of the ... history... list... thing is in the lower right corner of the screen during gameplay ("Boar hits Derp for 20 Slash damage")? And How to have it hide/minimize when not in combat, but then have it auto expand when in combat? Also- This wiki does not have a section for key bindings, shortcuts or hot key stuff. Nor does it have a location where questions like this can easily be asked.

A wiki is not a place where you ask questions, it is an evolving reference tool which is created and maintained by contributors such as yourself which people can consult. I made a default key bindings page, but I only installed the game this morning, so until then, I had no idea. Feel free to add the information you know about. That's how wikis work. — Game widow (talk) 14:40, 28 March 2015 (UTC)

Multilingual

Will the wiki available in several languages like in other gamepedias as Terraria?

--Yllelder (talk) 20:28, 19 January 2015 (UTC)

In order for a wiki to be available in another language, someone must actually translate it. So which language were you interested in, and are you volunteering to begin translating the information here to that language ? — Game widow (talk) 12:49, 28 March 2015 (UTC)
Ideally, this process should involve the guys, who participated in localization, since they have all the "canon" glossaries and other stuff required to facilitate the process. However, this can be reverse-engineered through multiple playthroughs. I can help with Russian as soon as I finish playthrough in English and start another one in Russian. — archdron (talk) 15:30, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

Main Page Locked

Why did the gamepedia admin lock the main page? There is new information that could be added to the main page (thanks to an expansion coming out soon), but we can't alter it at all. –Preceding unsigned comment was added by GeeseHoward (talkcontribs) at 19:36, 30 June 2015 (UTC). The main page was locked to prevent vandalism since it's such a high traffic page. If there's specific information you'd like added, post it here and I will update the main page. --Alianin T • C 15:29, 4 July 2015 (UTC)
Yeah but you also seem to have locked all teh other pages in the wiki while doing that. The Zahua and Devil of Caroc pages still have the old playing card portraits because no one can update them. And their discussion pages also seem to be locked. --69.249.29.124 10:26, 11 August 2015 (UTC)
Those pages are not locked down. Have you tried logging in to edit them? --Alianin T • C 11:44, 11 August 2015 (UTC)

Ability Infobox

The "Effect" field is broken and displays some wiki pseudocode. Does anyone know how to fix it? --Preceding unsigned comment added by Gairnulf, 22:38, 6 November 2015 (UTC)

Additions needed to GamePlay

Could we please add the following items under Game Mechanics, so descriptions can be added for them:

  • Dialogs
  • Scripted interactions
  • Reputation

Tungsticgp (talk) 06:25, 17 November 2015 (UTC)

These were added. --Alianin T • C 16:20, 22 November 2015 (UTC)
It turns out that name of the actual existing page is "Scripted interaction" (no "s"). Please adjust accordingly. --Tungsticgp (talk) 02:29, 25 November 2015 (UTC)
This was updated. --Alianin T • C 14:33, 25 November 2015 (UTC)

Locations

It would be great to have some sort of comprehensive map of locations, perhaps structured as 2 or 3 levels of detail (Dyrwood > Twin Elms > Hearthsong). At the moment, what we have is partial descriptions in various locations, e.g.:

Is anyone willing to propose a structure?

Even better would be to have an interactive map. Any chance of getting an image of the populated world map from the development team (since it's pretty hard see a full view in the game)?

--Tungsticgp (talk) 04:15, 25 November 2015 (UTC)

UI and Controls

We need something on the main page that links to somewhere the UI can be described, i.e., the screen layout, and the controls. There is already a preliminary Controls page that's not linked in - not sure about the rest. --Tungsticgp (talk) 20:57, 25 December 2015 (UTC)

"Official" Pillars of Eternity Wiki in window title

I don't get it, I thought this was not an official wiki, in which case it's at best misleading. 37.58.59.88 14:20, 5 March 2016 (UTC)

What does "official wiki" mean to you? This wiki is the wiki for Pillars of Eternity.
It has been endorsed by the game's developers.
It even used to be linked from the game's website (though at some point the website got a redesign and the wiki link was no longer included).
If you go to the Pillars of Eternity forums and talk about "the wiki", everyone will know that you mean this wiki right here.
I'd say that makes it as official as a game wiki can be... :)
--Ineth2 (talk) 18:53, 5 March 2016 (UTC)

Page layout – Step I

I have added the game's Twitter to the news section. The official PoE2 news forum doesn't feed the feed, yet, so those news are all old. Don't know if that will be changed somewhen.
I've thought of switching some items on the main page, not only to integrate the Twitter more aesthetically…

  • The "Welcome" to the top center
  • The "Screenshot" below
  • The "Expansions" bottom centered
  • The "News" to the right – though then adjustments are needed according to the column width of 300px and the longer feed lines, perhaps.

I won't do this without discussion. So, add comments! :o)
And – as the section title says – these will probably only be first steps… -- UserCCCSig -- You talkin' to me? -- cCContributions -- 19:36, 29 January 2017 (UTC)

See also my (tentative) changes to the sidebar‎‎. -- UserCCCSig -- You talkin' to me? -- cCContributions -- 14:34, 30 January 2017 (UTC)

I wrote about it somewhere, but I've been thinking about a re-design of the frontpage. For now I just added a central logo above the sections. More long-term, in light of the wiki becoming multi-game, I think a Tabber setup could look good. That would enable users to flip between Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, while we can squeeze in many links for each game, using sub-headers, without totally cluttering the frontpage with links. I see some other wikis use it, and think it could be a good fit for us.
Otherwise, you (pl.) may have noticed that I've changed a few things around the place, including a brand new dark-themed skin, and a new mobile skin. Pangaearocks (talk) 22:51, 9 October 2017 (UTC)

Add GOG link

Some people may choose DRM-free version of the game. Please add GOG version as well... Wakeup12, 09:20, 12 October 2017 (UTC)

I was actually looking at that a few days ago, but didn't find suitable non-intrusive icons for all shops, so postponed it in favour of working on other things. I'd like to overhaul the frontpage at a later date anyway. Not sure we should have links to stores like that anyhow, at least not as dominating as that. But if we do, GOG should definitely be there too, as the DRM Free (and hence best ;-)) option. Pangaearocks (talk) 22:01, 12 October 2017 (UTC)
The link to the Humble Store came, AFAIK, from the official website's buying option, which now was switched to Paradox Interactive. We could adapt this, but the Humble Store page has a link back to us, which I think should be regarded with some respect. -- UserCCCSig -- You talkin' to me? -- cCContributions -- 16:22, 2 November 2017 (UTC)
I suggest removing the Humble store badge on the main page and putting in links on the Sidebar and/or the game page. Or move away from images and just include links. --Alianin T •  C 15:05, 11 November 2017 (UTC)
I agree with that. It doesn't look good to have such big attention seekers on the main page, and very few wikis have that. I was thinking we could add some store links in the infobox for each game, including the expansions. The wiki should mainly be for information purposes, not as a marketing tool. Besides, people going to the wiki of a game, will probably have purchased the game already, so it doesn't make much sense to have store links as kind-of the central feature of the main page. Which is why I removed it in the editcopy. —Pangaearocks (talk) 17:56, 11 November 2017 (UTC)
Agreed with removing that. Problem is: if we start listing one shop (where "start" actually is the wrong term, we did it for two years now), wouldn't we have to list them all? If we put GOG, Steam and Humble in the infobox, we have to take EA's Origin, too. And of course Paradox, who are directly linked to OE. Can you buy the game at Amazon? Should they miss, then? How long shall this list become? And an example from another wiki: we once had not only links but even buying prices on the Vault, but those are all gone – from the infoboxes, from the articles. So this might be the best for Pillars, too. If needed, though, I'd go – as "Official Wiki" – the official way and link to OE's buying options. -- UserCCCSig -- You talkin' to me? -- cCContributions -- 12:58, 12 November 2017 (UTC)
Yeah, I think it might be better to just remove it. Seems like most wikis don't have buy links, and it quickly gets messy with various shops and not least game editions. If we include it, it should just be 3-4 places, and preferably not the vile Origin. The game is available... a few places. —Pangaearocks (talk) 14:16, 12 November 2017 (UTC)
Done! -- UserCCCSig -- You talkin' to me? -- cCContributions -- 15:27, 12 November 2017 (UTC)

Translation to spanish

Hi there! I'd like to start an spanish version of this WIKI based on this one. Is it possible to add a link in the left section that points to https://pillarsofeternity-es.gamepedia.com for instance so that I can begin editing the main page? Many thanks in advance! Khedros (talk) 15:45, 21 November 2017 (UTC)

The way to start would be to make pages with /es suffixes. See Translation guidelines on the Help wiki. --Pcj 16:01, 21 November 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for taking this on! Once you've translated the main page and a handful of wikis, we can get the es wiki spun up. Please let us know if you have any questions! --Alianin T •  C 21:41, 21 November 2017 (UTC)
I'm open for ideas how to implement and promote this on the main page, so that we might find more people who are able to help Khedros translating …
  • A new, temporary box right below the logo, in the center?
  • On the right, in the "Community" section?
  • Under "Spotlight"?
  • Not at all?
-- UserCCCSig -- You talkin' to me? -- cCContributions -- 01:13, 23 November 2017 (UTC)
Any help promoting the spanish version would be really appreciated, as there's a lot to do as you might think. I'd add a link in the "Community" section or a side-note in the news section perhaps? Khedros (talk) 09:06, 24 November 2017 (UTC)

German Translation

Hi, I'd like to start a German translation of the Wiki.

I guess I'll just start creating /de versions of all the pages, as mentioned in the Translation guidelines? :)

CAPSonYT (talk) 20:30, 16 February 2018 (UTC)

That's generally how we do it, yes. :) Tagaziel (talk) 21:08, 16 February 2018 (UTC)
I've created a German, general discussion about the topic. In case, there are more ideas or questions, put them there: Pillars of Eternity Wiki talk:Community portal/de. -- UserCCCSig -- You talkin' to me? -- cCContributions -- 14:51, 10 March 2018 (UTC)

MediaWiki update issues (Nov 2018)

It seems like the latest updates to MediaWiki have caused some issues, namely with cargo lookups - but also some other visual issues. I assume many of these will be able to be fixed in underlying templates and CSS, but perhaps some of them are just MediaWiki incompatibilities with existing plugins. If you come across an issue - please post it here so that it can be documented and looked at. Macklin (talk) 09:19, 15 November 2018 (UTC)

Open issues

  • Watchlist star icon being pushed out of header.
  • Search box icon being pushed out of header.
  • Share dropdown in header misaligned (probably not a big deal).
    • Perhaps Tagaziel can help here … -- UserCCCSig -- You talkin' to me? -- cCContributions -- 11:01, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
      • I'll take a look into it tomorrow, was a couple days only on mobile, which isn't really fun editing and such …
      • I don't see the misaligned "Share" – could you elaborate? (It's a known – to me – issue that, I think due to the link underlining, "PAGE" – Discussion – Share" don't share the same bottom line height, the active tab is always a pixel higher – if this is an issue, and solvable. -- UserCCCSig -- You talkin' to me? -- cCContributions -- 19:38, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
        • I was indeed talking about it being a few pixels lower, totally trivial I know. Macklin (talk) 15:01, 20 November 2018 (UTC)
  • Duplicate rows in cargo on page edit (I've seen this in Enchantment_poe1 and Location_poe1 so far). Added "group by = _pageName" in related cargo query templates to prevent duplicates from showing on pages. Perhaps recreating the table will fix it?
    • Has this really become worse? Because, there's always been issues with duplicate rows. I'm currently analyzing this with the temporary Weapon_poe1 replacement … -- UserCCCSig -- You talkin' to me? -- cCContributions -- 19:38, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
      • Hmm, I was seeing duplicate entries appear whenever I made changes to a location infobox (both in the cargo table, and in queries). Looking now however, the duplicates seem to be gone. I just tested again with Swamp and it didn't make a duplicate. I'm not sure what changed, if anything, or if it just takes a while for duplicates to get resolved. Fixed, I guess? Macklin (talk) 15:01, 20 November 2018 (UTC)
  • Special:CargoTables/Soulbound_upgrade_poe1 definitely needs to be remade - take a look at the enchantments column for "Marux Amanth", it's all wrong.

Resolved issues

  • Template:Infobox bestiary poe2: Location showing error instead of empty box, while pulling data from Template:Cargo monster locations. Visible in all poe2 bestiary infoboxes.
    • Theoretically, this is expected behavior, due to this code in the template: {{#iferror: {{Cargo monster locations}} | An error occurred}}. As I've been pretty inactive for quite a time, I'm not really into Cargo at the moment, but might the cause be that there aren't any PoE2 cargo tables defined, yet? -- UserCCCSig -- You talkin' to me? -- cCContributions -- 10:55, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
      • I just added the iferror as a temporary "fix", the actual error was pushing out the infobox way too much. I too have a suspicion that it has something to do with the cargo tables needing to be created, hopefully it's that easy. Macklin (talk) 11:11, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
  • Template:Creature variants: same issue.
    • Haven't looked into this, but I guess, the same reason as well. -- UserCCCSig -- You talkin' to me? -- cCContributions -- 10:55, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
  • Template:Cargo enchantment effects: same issue, visible in Template:Infobox weapon poe2

I've created Special:CargoTables/Armor poe2, Special:CargoTables/Bestiary poe2 and Special:CargoTables/Shield poe2. This should have fixed some. Could you please check, Macklin? I don't get it why this also should have affected enchantment effects, but at least a single weapon I checked had some bad error removed since. -- UserCCCSig -- You talkin' to me? -- cCContributions -- 03:14, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

P.S. Don't forget to purge the page if errors still exist. -- UserCCCSig -- You talkin' to me? -- cCContributions -- 03:47, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
I checked through a few pages, and it seems to have been fixed. Great work! Macklin (talk) 05:47, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

Adding poe2 expansions to sidebar

Hopefully I wasn't out of place adding the poe2 expansions to the sidebar just now, Just putting this here after the fact. Was it needed or does it look out of place? Macklin (talk) 06:18, 14 January 2019 (UTC)

Congrats for your first MediaWiki edit! ;) -- UserCCCSig -- You talkin' to me? -- cCContributions -- 11:36, 14 January 2019 (UTC)

Additions to main page

Add links to Deadfire rules in Ruleset box

In the box called Ruleset, I suggest you add links to important Deadfire rules. For example, the page Status_effects_(Deadfire) is really important and crucial, as those rules are not always obvious in-game and have changed along the updates. In the Ruleset, I would like to add Status Effects (Deadfire), but I cannot edit this page. --BarazSiriel (talk) 00:17, 14 December 2019 (UTC)

Deadfire info box: add link to Ships

In the Deadfire info box on this main page, there are links to various stuff like Armors, Pets, etc.
Considering the nature/style of the game, I suggest there should be a link to Ships.
I do not have the permissions to edit it myself.
--BarazSiriel (talk) 00:51, 28 January 2020 (UTC)

I missed this earlier. These are good ideas, but I think that the ruleset section should be as generic as possible, and should only refer to pages that talk about both games or a mechanics that is shared by both games. If we start adding links like Status effects and Status effects (Deadfire) for every mechanic, you can see how cluttered it would become.
This is another issue entirely with the addition of Deadfire content to what was a single-game wiki, and the need to shuffle everything around to make the focus on Pillars of Eternity as a franchise instead of just on the first game. I think eventually we'll come to a solution, but right now the wiki is still skewed to one side. We still need to work on making articles more generic, and splitting game-specific content into sections or separate articles entirely.
Anyway, that's another tangent entirely. I think eventually we'll need to move Status effects to Status effects (Pillars of Eternity) (and the likely hundreds of links to it), and re-purpose the original as a psuedo-disambiguation page - sort of like Consumables. Another solution would be to add a mechanics section to both game boxes, where game-specific pages from the ruleset box can go (like abilities, character creation, leveling up, and status effects).
For now I think we'll have to just deal with it. Here are the following additions, along with some edits I've been planning on making for a while:
So here's what it looks like now:
and with the changes:

There's a ton of other fixes that need to be made, mainly to redirects and redundant links. I'll have to do this another time, but I will leave this here for now in case there are any more suggestions. Thoughts and opinions would be appreciated :) Macklin (talk) 11:59, 28 January 2020 (UTC)
