The Child of Five Suns is a side quest and companion quest for Pallegina in Pillars of Eternity.
Synopsis[ | ]
Pallegina feels she has been wasting her time on trivial tasks in Defiance Bay. She believes there are more serious threats to the Vailian Republics and wants the Watcher's help in pursuing them.
Despite her best efforts, Ambassador Agosti has insisted that Pallegina carry out her orders to broker a trade agreement between the Vailian Republics and the Glanfathans with the anamenfath in Twin Elms. Such an agreement would steal trade away from the Dyrwood, an act that would increase tensions between the Dyrwood and the Republics.
Pallegina is caught between honoring the wishes of the ducs bels and pursuing the leads she believes will be more beneficial to her country in the long run, which involve learning about animancy.
Walkthrough[ | ]
Pallegina's personal quest is received after she joins your party at the end of At All Costs, by talking to Vicent Agosti in the Vailian Embassy in First Fires. The quest cannot be resolved until Act 3, when Twin Elms becomes available. Upon approaching the anamenfath at the Passage of the Six, Pallegina will confide in you that she has reservations about going through with the deal.
When you ask her what options she has, she responds: "I could put the idea in the anamenfath's head that the Republics are not interested in exclusive trade, but limited trade of goods that they do not already trade with the Dyrwoodans."
To which you can reply with a number of options. Don't worry about your choice here, since the decision is entirely determined by your response in the upcoming dialogue with Bethwl (with one exception - see below)
- "It's the right thing to do. The Dyrwoodans are at the mercy of the Republics and they don't even know it. Your actions today can prevent further suffering." (Benevolent)
- '"Follow your heart, Pallegina. You alone know what must be done." (Passionate)
- "If you do that, I doubt the ducs will be forgiving. Consider your options carefully, Pallegina. The ramifications for yourself and these nations could be great." (Diplomatic)
- "That's a terrible idea and the ducs will surely eject you from the brotherhood if you go through with it. Stop and think for a minute." (Rational)
- Otherwise you can choose to ignore her entirely when she brings it up
- "You've had enough time to wrestle with your inner turmoil. I need to talk to the anamenfath and I'm not waiting on your conscience. Understand?" (Cruel)
During her dialogue with Bethwl, you can either confirm what you said or deny it by the motion of your head. If you choose to nod or shake your head, she will always follow these choices regardless of your previous thoughts or dialogue.
[Nod head, smiling warmly.] | → | She will defy the ducs and preserve the current trade agreement between the Glanfathans and the Dyrwood. |
---|---|---|
[Shake head, eyes wide.] | → | She will follow the ducs orders, robbing the Dyrwood of their trades with the Glanfathans |
[Shrug.] | → | She makes her own decision (see below). |
Your decision here affects what proposal she will make, to two ultimate outcomes:
- Follow her orders and establish an exclusive trade deal with the Glanfathans, stealing their trade away from the Dyrwood to benefit the economy of the Republics, though leading to increased tensions with the Dyrwood.
- Disregard her orders and modify the trade deal with the Glanfathans, limiting it to goods that they do not already trade with the Dywoodans, preventing the Republics from stealing the Glanfathan trade away from the Dyrwood and preserving the relations between the two nations, though at the expense of her loyalty to the Republics and the chance of a more profitable outcome for the Republics.
Her choice, along with your own decisions at the end of the main quest Memories of the Ancients (primarily whether you distribute the souls to the Dyrwood or not) will be reflected in the end-game slides, and will also influence Pallegina's initial location, introductory dialogue, back story, and what breastplate she wears in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire.
Pallegina's own decision (alternate)[ | ]
However if you choose to shrug at Pallegina, she will be forced to make up her own mind, and her decision is entirely dependent on your dialogue with her throughout the quest, as well as in your previous conversation with her regarding the matter. If you have been "pro" Pallegina, and have supported her 3 or more times during the course of the quest, she will defy the ducs (equivalent to nodding above), otherwise she will follow her orders (equivalent to shaking head above).
Supporting Pallegina is done through 4 main dialogue chains - a minimum of 3 of these are required
- (1st point) Firstly, during your conversation with Vicent Agosti after Pallegina joins the party, if you pick the following dialogue options:
- "I understand, but we're still going to investigate it, responsibilities or not."
- OR
- [Lie] [Wink obnoxiously at Pallegina.] "I understand completely and will make sure she completes this important mission for the ducs."
- "I understand, but we're still going to investigate it, responsibilities or not."
- (2nd point) Next, only if you you made Stoic dialogue choices, or if you took Pallegina's side in the conversation with Vicent Agosti:
- Stoic against Vicent (requires all of the following):
- [Remain silent.]
- [Say nothing.]
- [Say nothing.]
- [Nod noncommittally.]
- Side with Pallegina (requires only 3 of the following):
- "Ambassador, please hear her out."
- "Quit stonewalling and pay attention for once!"
- "If it makes any difference, Ambassador, I'm already looking into the matters Pallegina has spoken of."
- "What kind of spineless do-nothing are you? If you and the ducs aren't going to take her seriously, shove off!"
- "Ambassador, that's some cold compassion considering what these people have been through."
- "I understand, but we're still going to investigate it, responsibilities or not."
- During your dialogue with Pallegina immediately following, if you fulfilled either of the above requirements, you must say the following:
- If picked Stoic dialogue options:
- Pallegina: "And you couldn't say anything, really? Not a word the whole time."
- "I'm an outsider. The discussion was between you and the ambassador."
- "I think you're in the right, but I didn't want to make the ambassador any angrier."
- If took Pallegina's side in the conversation
- Pallegina:"I appreciate that you stood up for me, but it's hard to persuade the ambassador to go against the ducs' orders."
- "I know you're right, Pallegina. We may find a way for you to fulfill your obligations while looking into what's really going on around here. Don't worry."
- You'll know if you're successful if she says:
- "Enough wisdom for both of us. Now I just need to find out how to get to Twin Elms before the ambassador loses his patience."
- If picked Stoic dialogue options:
- Stoic against Vicent (requires all of the following):
- (3rd point) Immediately after the above portion of conversation, regardless of if you are successful:
- Pallegina: She pauses in thought. "Still, I fear that making this deal with the Glanfathans will further weaken the Dyrwood and make trouble for the Republics in the years to come."
- "Follow your heart. Do what you believe will be best for the Republics."
- Pallegina: "I wish I knew."
- (4th point) Upon approaching the anamenfath The Passage of the Six, Pallegina has mixed feelings about the deal:
- Pallegina: "I could put the idea in the anamenfath's head that the Republics are not interested in exclusive trade, but limited trade of goods that they do not already trade with the Dyrwoodans."
- "It's the right thing to do. The Dyrwoodans are at the mercy of the Republics and they don't even know it. Your actions today can prevent further suffering." (Benevolent)
- OR
- '"Follow your heart, Pallegina. You alone know what must be done." (Passionate)
Although you don't have to follow these steps (you can instead simply nod or shake your head, with no prior checks), it's an interesting alternate route nonetheless.
