Pillars of Eternity Wiki

In response to patch v1.3.7.0.1377 to Pillars of Eternity (June 6, 2024), the random loot tables shown on the wiki have been updated. These changes may take time to propegate.

As a result, random loot data is no longer accurate to old versions of the game, including all console ports. We'll be working to provide a mechanism to switch between pre-patch and post-patch loot for console players.

The Hunter's Favor is a side quest in The White March - Part I.

Synopsis[ | ]

One of Stalwart's best hunters, Thyrsc, has found his match in a cunning wolf that has repeatedly eluded his efforts to trap and kill it. While his most recent injuries prevent him from making another attempt himself, Thyrsc hopes that the beast can be dealt with before it preys upon more villagers. . According to Thyrsc, the wolf makes its lair in the area, though he has not been able to determine the den's location.

Walkthrough[ | ]

In Thyrsc's House near the north-east corner of Stalwart Village, you'll find the old hunter Thyrsc. He directs you to look for a particularly large and dangerous wolf in Russetwood which he's had trouble hunting.

Tracking the big wolf[ | ]

Head to Russetwood.

While exploring the map, you can come across four optional points of interest related to the quest:

Injured wolf Deer carcass Shrub Shrine of Galawain
(center-east of the map, just south of where you first arrive) (south-east of the central pond, straight west of the injured wolf) (north-east of the central pond, north of the carcass) (north-east of the map, north of the shrub)
The hunters favor injured wolf

You come across a wolf with a silver arrow in its right foreleg. You can kill, heal it, or ignore it (see below)

The hunters favor deer carcass

You'll notice that a large predator has gnawed on this deer.

The hunters favor shrub

You'll notice that wolves have brushed against this shrub.

The hunters favor altar

When you touch the altar, you'll have a vision in which you learn that an item has been stolen from this altar and that this has incurred the wrath of the god of the hunt.

Dealing with the injured wolf

With Perception 12, examining the wound reveals that trying to remove the arrow without knowledge or care may provoke further injury.

You can calm the wolf with one of the following:

You may extract the arrow from its foreleg with:

  • The talent Field Triage (it cannot have been used that day, but the wolf will still be there later). If Edér is in the party, this may be done without calming the wolf first, as he will step in to hold it down.
  • Survival 7 (only after having first calmed the wolf). Unlike all other checks, this may be performed by any character in the party.

You may also choose to put the wolf out of its misery with Might 16 to pin it down and slip a blade into its neck. If you fail this or extracting the arrow, the wolf will attack.

If you heal the injured wolf, the wolves in the cave later on will not harm the hunters. Either way you get a Silver Arrow, used to create the soulbound hunting bow, Stormcaller. The other three points of interest are just informational for now.

At last, make your way to the Wolf Cave at the center of the top edge of the map. It is guarded by wolves and has a trail of blood leading into it. Enter the cave.

Dealing with the big wolf[ | ]

Inside you'll find the beast you've been tracking: It turns out to be a druid who got stuck in his spiritshifted form and lost his higher cognitive abilities. Several winter wolves accompany him, and they've dragged two injured Stalwart Village hunters into their lair for later consumption.

Decide if you will:

Kill the druid wolf

This saves the hunters, but you won't get the Ancestor Pendant. (There is another way to save them though, see below.)

Help restore the druid wolf to his human form

In the dialog, reach out to the druid wolf's soul to learn that he has been cursed for taking a totem from Galawain's shrine. Eventually select the option to back away.

If you previously healed the injured winter wolf (see above), it will return the favor by jumping in front of the hunters and guarding them for you while you're away. Otherwise the hunters will be dead when you return (although that only matters if you end up fighting Suldrun i.e. if you exit the cave, re-enter it and approach Suldrun without replacing the Totem as described below, if you actually replace the totem before you return to the cave everyone, including the hunters, is gone expect for Suldrun in human form).

Leave the cave and head to the Hunters' Camp on the bottom of the Russetwood map. Find the Hunter's Totem in the hollow log. Note that it is not selectable before you've read the druid wolf's soul and you must be sneaking with at least Mechanics 2 in order for it to appear.

The hunters favor totem

Head to the Shrine of Galawain in the north-east of the map, and place the totem on the altar.

Return to the wolf cave and speak with the former druid wolf, who is now human again and turns out to be Suldrun, Thyrsc's son. Decide to:

  • Convince him to return to Stalwart Village.
  • Convince him to avoid Stalwart Village.
  • Kill him.

If you let him live, he gives you the Ancestor Pendant. Before you leave, be sure to pick up Curoc's Brand from a corpse frozen to the wall on the far side of the cave.

Return to Stalwart and talk to Thyrsc. He gives you the Cloak of the Frozen Hunt as a reward no matter how you resolved the encounter with the druid wolf. If you ask for some coin, he will also give you Copper pands (cp)500 for your troubles.

ID Objectives
0 The Hunter's Favor
10000 One of Stalwart's best hunters, Thyrsc, has found his match in a cunning wolf that has repeatedly eluded his efforts to trap and kill it. While his most recent injuries prevent him from making another attempt himself, Thyrsc hopes that the beast can be dealt with before it preys upon more villagers.
Alternate descriptions
40001 There is a shrine of Galawain within the Russetwood. It appears that an item which once adorned the shrine has been removed - an act which has incurred great wrath...
40002 A spiritshifter has taken up residence within a cavern in the Russetwood, becoming a menace to local hunters.
1 Hunt down the wolf.
10001 Thyrsc has described his hunt for a dangerous - and very large - wolf that is preying on villagers within the Russetwood. According to Thyrsc, the wolf makes its lair in the area, though he has not been able to determine the den's location.
20000 I found a half-eaten deer carcass out in the wilderness, just south of the frozen lake. It looks like the work of a large predator, and I found nearby prints leading away to the north.
20001 I found a tuft of wolf hair snagged on a bramble, just east of the frozen lake. The wolf must have come through the area recently.
20002 I found a trail leading through a dense group of bowed trees and into a clearing coated in bones. I believe I have found the wolf's den.
20006 There is a shrine of Galawain within the Russetwood. It appears that an item which once adorned the shrine has been removed - an act which has incurred great wrath...
2 Bring down your quarry.
10002 I have tracked the wolf to its lair, and must now confront it within.
20003 The 'wolf' I found in the cavern bears more resemblance to a spiritshifter - though it appears incapable of communicating.
20004 My Watcher abilities granted me a vision from what appears to have been the druid's past. In the vision, a young man took a totem from a shrine of Galawain. His subsequent attempt to shift into his druid form seems to have resulted in his becoming 'trapped' in that other skin. Perhaps the totem has something to do with all this - it may still be at the old campsite where it was dropped.
20005 Thyrsc confirmed that the wolf he chased is not a common beast, but a druid - more specifically, his son. Suldrun took on his wolf-shape to fight off an ogre that stumbled upon their camp - and subsequently attacked his own father before running into the wilds. Thyrsc has lost hope of having his son returned to him, and urged me to ensure the safety of Stalwart's people.
20007 There is a shrine of Galawain within the Russetwood. It appears that an item which once adorned the shrine has been removed - an act which has incurred great wrath...
20010 I found a bear totem by a long-abandoned camp. This seems to be the same one I saw in the vision, which was removed from a shrine of Galawain.
3 Return to Thyrsc.
10003 The wolf that Thyrsc hunted was more than a mere beast - it was a druid, so wholly consumed by his animal spirit that he could no longer engage rationally with kith. He gave me little choice but to slay him. Thyrsc may appreciate an update on the situation.
4 Return to Thyrsc
10004 With the totem returned to the shrine of Galawain, Suldrun was able to change back from his druid shape. He was shaken from his ordeal, and decided to return to Thyrsc. Doubtless the old hunter will be surprised to see him.
5 Return to Thyrsc
10005 With the totem returned to the shrine of Galawain, Suldrun was able to change back from his druid shape. He was ashamed of all the foul deeds he performed while under Galawain's curse, and decided to leave Stalwart rather than face his father again. Thyrsc will doubtless want to know what became of my efforts.
6 Return to Thyrsc
10006 Suldrun is dead, and the 'beast' that threatened the hunters of Stalwart dies with him. Thyrsc may be interested in hearing the outcome of my hunt.
7 Return to the Cave
10007 I returned the carved totem to the shrine of Galawain in the Russetwood, and received a vision. It seems that something has changed within these woods.
8 Confront the beast.
10008 I have encountered a strange, feral creature within an icy cavern in the Russetwood. Judging by the collection of bones in the cavern, it has been feasting on kith for some time.
20008 The 'wolf' I found in the cavern bears more resemblance to a spiritshifter - though it appears incapable of communicating.
20009 My Watcher abilities granted me a vision from what appears to have been the druid's past. In the vision, a young man took a totem from a shrine of Galawain. His subsequent attempt to shift into his druid form seems to have resulted in his becoming 'trapped' in that other skin. Perhaps the totem has something to do with all this - it may still be at the old campsite where it was dropped.
10 Find Thyrsc in Stalwart.
10010 With the totem returned to the shrine of Galawain, Suldrun was able to change back from his druid shape. He was shaken from his ordeal, and decided to return to his father, Thyrsc. No doubt Thyrsc will be much surprised by the news.
11 Find Thyrsc in Stalwart.
10011 With the totem returned to the shrine of Galawain, Suldrun was able to change back from his druid shape. He was ashamed of all the foul deeds he performed while under Galawain's curse, and decided to leave Stalwart rather than face his father, Thyrsc, again. Thyrsc will doubtless want to know what became of my efforts.
End states
No Quest Fail
30000 Someone critical to this quest has died.
Yes Killed Suldrun Without Full Knowledge
30001 I slew the beast as Thyrsc requested. He was thankful for my actions, though he grieves still for the loss of his son. Perhaps the western forest will be a little safer now.
Yes Killed Suldrun With Knowledge
30002 I slew the spiritshifted druid, putting an end to his predations upon Stalwart's hunters. Thyrsc was thankful for my actions, though he grieves still for the loss of his son. Perhaps the western forest will be a little safer now.
Yes Cured Suldrun, Went Back To His Father
30003 With the totem returned to the shrine of Galawain, Suldrun was able to change back into his normal form. He joined his father in Stalwart. It may take some time, but perhaps they can find some peace.
Yes Cured Suldrun, Exiled Himself
30004 With the totem returned to the shrine of Galawain, Suldrun was able to change back into his normal form. Ashamed of his deeds, he decided to flee Stalwart, and seek what life he can make for himself far from the site of his crimes. For now, the beast is gone - and Thyrsc can give up his hunt.
Yes Cured Suldrun, Thyrsc is Dead
30005 With the totem returned to the shrine of Galawain, Suldrun was able to change back into his normal form. However, he was distraught to hear of Thyrsc' death, and attacked me, forcing me to kill him.
Yes Cured Suldrun, Killed Him
30006 With the totem returned to the shrine of Galawain, Suldrun was able to change back into his normal form. I slew him once he was back in his own skin, and put an end to Thyrsc' hunt.
