Pillars of Eternity Wiki

In response to patch v1.3.7.0.1377 to Pillars of Eternity (June 6, 2024), the random loot tables shown on the wiki have been updated. These changes may take time to propegate.

As a result, random loot data is no longer accurate to old versions of the game, including all console ports. We'll be working to provide a mechanism to switch between pre-patch and post-patch loot for console players.

The Recluse of the White March is a main quest in The White March - Part I.

Synopsis[ | ]

Galvino, an eccentric smith and animancer, lives in the shadow of Durgan's Battery. He may know something of interest about the keep. He may have something useful to say about the keep.

Walkthrough[ | ]

You automatically get this quest when you first talk to mayor Renengild in Stalwart in the course of the Durgan's Battery quest. First, you need to reach Galvino in his cabin and ask him about getting into the Battery, to receive Galvino's Resonance Amplifier. Then use it on the denizens of Stalwart to find someone with a soul that belonged to the Battery dwarves, so that you can learn the cantec leading into the Battery.

There are two candidates:

  • Owynna is the easier conversation but her soul will be permanently awakened.
  • Taena is the more dangerous choice but you can push the awakened soul back down and end up with a positive result for Taena. You need to pass one of the following checks in order to succeed:
    • Choose "I mean no harm, Zenove.", then Lore 7, then Resolve or Constitution 18.
    • Perception 15 or Resolve 16.
    • (You receive another possible check if you visit the gate to Durgan's Battery and listen to the two ghosts first for Resolve 17)
As a side-effect of awakening Taena's soul, a stash of Durgan Iron Ingots later becomes available in Iron Flail Fort. This stash will be empty if you awakened Owynna instead, or if Taena dies after awakening (that is, if player does not succeed in pushing Zenove's awakened soul back down after awakening her).

After you learn the cantec, you only need the relief from the Ogre Matron and you're good to go.

ID Objectives
0 The Recluse of the White March
10000 Galvino lives in the shadow of Durgan's Battery. He may know something of interest about the keep.
1 Find Galvino's hut near Durgan's Battery.
10001 Renengild told me I can find Galvino, an eccentric smith and animancer, east of Durgan's Battery. Uldric believes he may have something useful to tell me about the keep.
20005 I've found Galvino's hut, but I don't see him here. Perhaps it's worth looking around.
3 Find a villager in Stalwart whose soul ancestor is a dwarf of Durgan's Battery.
10003 According to Galvino, if I'm to enter Durgan's Battery, I'll need its cantec - a poem the dwarves would have used back when the keep was active. Unfortunately, anyone who would have known it is dead.

However, Galvino suggested that Stalwart may contain soul descendants of those dwarves - given my abilities, they won't be hard to find. I could learn the cantec by Awakening one of those souls. That may also doom someone to a fate like mine... or Maerwald's.

20000 Galvino gave me a tool that might help. If I use it in the presence of villagers, it should specify anyone whose soul lineage is a few hundred years old. It's not perfect, but it should narrow my search.
20001
4 Awaken the soul of a dwarf from Durgan's Battery.
10004 I've found a direct soul descendant of someone from Durgan's Battery. I could Awaken this person now, or I could continue searching Stalwart for another candidate.

One way or another, I'll have to Awaken somebody who can tell me the cantec of Durgan's Battery. I should be able to Awaken an older soul by speaking directly to it.

Easy enough, but it may have unpredictable consequences for the villager that soul lives in.

20002 Owynna, a maid at the Gréf's Rest, shares her soul with a dwarf named Gregur. He's corrupt and deceitful, so Awakening him could make things... interesting for the shy maid.
20003 Taena, the old overseer of the mine, is the soul descendant of a hot-tempered woman named Zenove. As violent as Zenove's final memories were, Awakening her could be a risky proposition.
20004 There may be someone else in town I could Awaken.
End states
Yes Awakened Oswynna
30000 I learned the cantec from Gregur, a crooked guard captain of Durgan's Battery whose soul lives in Owynna. The Awakening appears to be working a change on her already.

The verses of the cantec are:

"Hammers of Durgan, ring loud! May the anvil's deep music resound.

"Walls of the Battery safeguard our works from marauder and wilder alike.

"Abydon's faithful travail by the Forge and the fires that brighten the ore."

Yes Awakened Taena
30001 I learned the cantec from Zenove, a dwarf who lived and died in Durgan's Battery. I was able to harness Zenove's intensity without overwhelming Taena. In fact, the old mine overseer appears to have found a new source of energy.

The verses of the cantec are:

"Hammers of Durgan, ring loud! May the anvil's deep music resound.

"Walls of the Battery safeguard our works from marauder and wilder alike.

"Abydon's faithful travail by the Forge and the fires that brighten the ore."

Yes Killed Taena
30002 I learned the cantec from Zenove, a dwarf who lived and died in Durgan's Battery. Unfortunately, Zenove took over Taena's body and attacked me, and I was forced to kill her.

The verses of the cantec are:

"Hammers of Durgan, ring loud! May the anvil's deep music resound.

"Walls of the Battery safeguard our works from marauder and wilder alike.

"Abydon's faithful travail by the Forge and the fires that brighten the ore."

Yes Learned from dead person
30003 The woman I needed to find was already dead, but I was able to learn the cantec from her lingering soul.

The verses of the cantec are:

"Hammers of Durgan, ring loud! May the anvil's deep music resound.

"Walls of the Battery safeguard our works from marauder and wilder alike.

"Abydon's faithful travail by the Forge and the fires that brighten the ore."
