True to Form is a side quest and companion quest for Hiravias in Pillars of Eternity.

Synopsis[ | ]

Hiravias has indicated a desire to speak with the druids that live in and around Twin Elms. He is no longer welcome in his own tribe due to their fear of his spiritform - the Autumn Stelgaer. He would welcome the insight of druids from other traditions - preferably traditions that do not have such a hostile reaction to the creature.

Walkthough[ | ]

  • Speak to Hiravias about his spiritshift after he joins your party.
  • Go to Elms' Reach and talk to Tamrwn in the Golden Grove. He will tell you to read the tablets in Blood Sands.
  • There are four tablets in Blood Sands. Read these and discuss them with Hiravias, then he will tell you that he wants to visit the Burial Isle. Note that your replies in conversation will determine whether Hiravias aligns himself with Wael or Galawain (see dialog section below) in the end.
  • Find the Grotto of Echoes in the west of the Burial Isle and speak to Scâthden. From here you will have two options:
    • Convince him to leave you and Hiravias alone. This will require you to select the dialogue option reminding Hiravias of Wael, afterwards you will be presented with two subsequent dialogue checks. One for 12 Resolve, and one for 14 Resolve, Dexterity or Might. These must be passed if you wish to avoid a fight. This option will not drop Traitors' Merit even if you decide to kill him afterwards.
    • Kill Scâthden and his 4 stelgaers. Upon looting his corpse you will find the unique pollaxe Traitors' Merit.
  • Either way, after your confrontation with Scâthden the quest will be finished. If you choose to leave Scâthden alive, talking to him at any point afterwards will cause him to turn hostile.

Tablet dialogue[ | ]

The first is by the entrance:

Upon Burial Isle, the two men meet again for the first time, though it was the last thing they did. The many-colored beast rent them both asunder. They were, in death, merged and made whole again.

Wael Galawain
→ "Prehaps the idea is that the Autumn Stelgaer might not really destroy the souls." +1
→ "Why so flippant? It sounds like Galawain gave you an incredible power. You were the one to ask for his help - it's not like he came to you." +1

One in the northeastern corner, past the chanters in the druid quarters:

As souls split into multitudes, many lives come from one. The Truest of power comes from sacrificing the shard to return its strength to the mother stone.

→ "Thanks for the animacy lesson - but what do you think this has to do with you?"
→ "Maybe the Autumn Stelgaer has a very important role to play in this life cycle of souls." +1
→ "So why did Wael lead you to this tablet?" +1

One outside the main sacrificial chamber:

"Each generation, the anamfath must stand before the Autumnal beast in judgment. The wise endure, passing on their strength."

"The weak are eaten - their souls ripped to pieces and lost for all time - removing such weakness from the cycle."

→ "But it's worth asking - in all your times walking in the Autumn Stelgaer's fur, how many souls have YOU destroyed?" +1
→ "A truth is revealed to you and you whine about your distaste for the answer? Wael would be ashamed of you." +1
→ "Did it ever occur to you that Galawain was testing you and you passed?" +1
→ "You seem so sad to have the spiritform of such a legendary beast. Don't tell me you never wished for power like that." +1

The next is in the northwest:

Is not the water sacrificed unto the plant? And the plant sacrificed unto livestock? And livestock unto man? When the lesser soul is sacrificed to strengthen the greater soul, the whole of our family grows stronger.

→ "You wear an eyepatch of Wael - I thought you were supposed to love cryptic information like this." +2
→ "Have you considered that the Autumn Stelgaer may have been sacrificed to you - that Galawain was making you stronger?" +1

Once you've viewed all four:
→ "Is it safe to say Wael brought you to where you needed to be?" +1
→ "Are you rethinking you opinion of Galawain's gift to you? +1

Notes[ | ]

  • If you're having problems getting Hiravias to choose the god you'd like, see his Endings section. Some of this pre-quest dialog can influence his decision.
  • If you choose to tear Thaos soul apart in the final story quest Memories of the Ancients, Hiravias dies and his quest fails even if it is completed.Verify

10000 My traveling companion Hiravias has indicated a desire to speak with the druids that live in and around Twin Elms.

Hiravias is no longer welcome in his own tribe due to their fear of his spiritform - the Autumn Stelgaer. He would welcome the insight of druids from other traditions - preferably traditions that do not have such a hostile reaction to the creature.

1 Investigate the stone tablets within Blood Sands.
10001 We spoke with Naca, mystic of the Blood Sands. Though she was not entirely lucid, she seemed preternaturally aware of Hiravias' spiritform.

Though she knew only a little of Hiravias' condition, she insisted the stone tablets carved in the halls of Blood Sands contain information that Hiravias will find illuminating.

20004 Hiravias read from a stone tablet that spoke of human sacrifice - likening the process to feeding plants to animals and animals to people. The inscription unnerved Hiravias.
20005 We found a stone tablet that spoke of spiritual leaders of the Glanfathans being judged by the Autumn Stelgaer. The writing suggested that the Stelgaer kills unfit anamfatha - destroying their souls in the process.
20006 A stone tablet in the Blood Sands spoke cryptically of souls splitting over the ages - one soul slowly becoming split into many. The tablet also hinted that great power comes from merging souls that were once split from the same origin.
20007 We discovered a stone tablet that told of two men meeting at Burial Isle and being reunited... by way of being eaten by an Autumn Stelgaer.
2 Investigate the stone tablets within Blood Sands.
10002 We spoke with Tamrwn, an Ovate of the Golden in Twin Elms. He was able to sense Hiravias' connection to the Autumn Stelgaer.

Tamrwn reluctantly suggested that we travel to the Blood Sands and read the stone tablets carved into the cavernous expanse. He hinted that the tablets contained information of great use to Hiravias.

20009 We found a stone tablet that spoke of spiritual leaders of the Glanfathans being judged by the Autumn Stelgaer. The writing suggested that the Stelgaer kills unfit anamfatha - destroying their souls in the process.

20011 We discovered a stone tablet that told of two men meeting at Burial Isle and being reunited... by way of being eaten by an Autumn Stelgaer.
3 Explore the Burial Isle.
10003 Hiravias read the parable written on the stones of the Blood Sands. The story spoke of the Autumn Stelgaer being sent to test anamfatha of their worth - those that fail are consumed by the Stelgaer so that their weakness does not live on and multiply.

The tablets also mentioned that many anamfatha would travel to the Burial Isle to meditate and be tested by these Autumn Stelgaers. Hiravias now wishes to explore the Burial Isle for one of these pilgrimage sites.

4 Investigate the stone tablets within Blood Sands.
10004 We have spoken with both Naca of the Ethik Nôl of Blood Sands, and with Tamrwn of the Ovates of the Golden Grove. Both of these druids were passingly familiar with Hiravias' spiritform, and both recommended reading the tablets in the Blood Sands - insisting the tablets contained wisdom Hiravias needed to read for himself.

6 Find a druid who knows more about the Autumn Stelgaer.
10006 Hiravias revealed that he was cast out of his circle because they considered his spiritshift form, the Autumn Stelgaer, an abomination. He wants to learn more about it, and feels that there may be a druid in Twin Elms who would know more.
End states
Yes Wael's Peace
30000 On Burial Isle, we encountered Scathden, another druid capable of assuming the Autumn Stelgaer form. Though a fight seemed inevitable, we managed to walk away from the meeting without a fight. Hiravias can't change the fact that his tribe resents his spiritform, but he seems happier knowing why it all happened - because Galawain 'gifted' him with a little too much hunter potential...
Yes Wael's Champion
30001 On Burial Isle, we encountered Scathden, another druid capable of assuming the Autumn Stelgaer form. Scathden and Hiravias have souls that split from the same ancestor, and Scathden was insistent on seeing who was the stronger half - Hiravias obliged, now Scathden is no more. Hiravias praised Wael for guiding him to some answers - he seems much more at ease now that he knows his mauling was a 'gift' - albeit a difficult one to bear.
Yes Galawain's Champion
30002 On Burial Isle, we encountered Scathden, another druid capable of assuming the Autumn Stelgaer form. Scathden and Hiravias have souls that split from the same ancestor, and Scathden was insistent on seeing who was the stronger half - Hiravias obliged, now Scathden is no more. Now that he understands that his mauling was a gift (albeit a painful one), Hiravias seems to have reconciled his faith in Galawain.
No QUEST FAILED
30003 We were unable to fully uncover the story behind Hiravias' near-death experience. Perhaps he will come to these answers in his own time.
No QUEST FAILED
30004 With Hiravias dead, there seems little need to further investigate his personal history.
